the local.

good news. i am starting to get used to the routine of the metro and knowing where to stand so that the door opens right in front of me. this means i don't get beat up trying to get a seat in the mornings/afternoons. i guess it also means i am becoming a "local."

life has been pretty mundane the past week... nothing too terribly exciting, except for babysitting three little girls... which i thought would be a lot of fun and super easy. well... it was a lot of fun... just hard as all get out. joe helped me (thank the Lord!) but i think we both realized that we never want to have kids... i definately don't have the energy.

my life is about to get pretty hectic though. this weekend i am going to knoxville for a wedding in which i have the honor of playing piano in. most of my graduating class from architecture will be there so we are going to party it up. i am coming back sunday for baby catherine's christening for which my grandmother (mimi) will be in town for. that night i am going to see Uncle Earl (a wonderful bluegrass band) with my friends drew and ellie holcomb (ellie is one of my close friends who was also a roommate my last year in school.) they are also traveling musicians... check them out at http://www.drewholcomb.com/.

another exciting thing is that my mom is coming in town the next weekend! i am really excited about having her here and getting to do girl stuff - shopping, chick flicks, etc. - that i don't like asking joe to do with me. i am excited to show her and my other guests (grandmother and friends) my new home and the city i am starting to fall for.

even though the next two weeks are busy, i am still getting used to being here in Alexandria. it has been a hard transition because i still don't know a lot of people. i am hoping that i begin to meet people, find a church, and start to settle. i am not sure how long it is going to take. but i hope that "the local" i feel like i am begginning to come... continues to be just that.

a perk.

one thing that makes dc/alexandria really wonderful is being close to some of my cousins. meet madeleine, savannah, and katherine.

maddi.

sassy.

catherine.
(nickname yet to be determined. kitty perhaps?)

these sisters are alot of fun to go and spend time with... they will wear you out though. "uncle joe" (as maddi and sassy have so kindly dubbed him) goes with me to visit sometimes... but when he does, they pretty much ignore me.

to explain their personalities a bit...

maddi has about 10 crushes (i think joe is one of them) at only 6 years old. she is a performer and pretty mellow (espicially with her sisters) but one of the goofiest kids i know.

sassy is the most head-strong of the family. at three years old, she will talk back to you and definately lives up to her name. she recently painted her mom's living room with a pink permaneent marker, making sure she covered all areas... such as the floor, furniture, walls and herself. the week before she finger-painted herself which also got everywhere. she is a hand full.

katherine is the sweetest baby. the only time she crys is when she is hungry and she loves to snuggle. she is only about 5 months old so we are still getting to know her.

to explain the bees on sassy and my forehead... sassy explained to me that we should put them on our foreheads. she then decided that it hurt so we should move them to our throats.

phantastic philly.

taking advantage of living in the southern-northeast, joe and i went to philly for a couple of days to visit the city of brotherly love. after paying about 10 dollars in tolls, we got there saturday afternoon and went straight to the corner of cheese-steak heaven... pat's and geno's. we waited in line at each for about 20 minutes and tried both. i liked geno's better (but joe highly disagrees.) although i have to say... the philly sandwich shoppe around the corner from my apartment makes just as good a sandwich.

we spent saturday taking a walking tour(with the best weather ever!) throughout old city and immersed ourself in history (sort of.)

outside betsy's house.

i have to say... philly is a very very dirty city, but there are parts that are quite wonderful. our fave stop of the day was the old city tavern where we tried a couple of original ales and recipes from georgewashington and thomasjefferson themselves. even marthawashington had an ale after her. the brewing company that supplies these is called "yards brewing company." i highly recommend them for any future visits.

joe and i got a couple of 6-packs for take-away which is a nice "grown-up"souvenir. another cool stop we made was at a cigar bar called "mahogany on walnut." it was a great find on walnut street (hence the name)... very chill and old school. apparently, cigar officiando rates it pretty high.
sunday morning we went to an amazing diner called "the continental" which is a great space and had some great "fancy" breakfast foods. as rachel-ray would say "yum-o!" (gah she annoys me.)

the rest of the day was spent in the non-crowded touristy/historical part of philly. let me tell you... if you are going to visit philly... the best time to be a tourist is on sunday morning. everything is open but no one is there. it was amazing. joe and i got a lesson in colonial printing one on one with the print-master. it was fab.

but now we are back and i can enjoy the rest of my labor day weekend just sitting and being lazy. i will close with some more pictures...

transitions.

the move to alexandria went pretty smoothly. i have been here about two months now and it is just now beginning to feel like home. to be honest, its been a hard transition. i love being near joe (the boyfriend) but its hard not having my own friends (people here just don't get my jokes... or maybe no one ever did and it was all just courtesy laughs.)

i figured i should finally post some pictures of my apartment, even though i haven't officially finishing setting it up... but i honestly don't think it will ever be complete in my mind. i live in an old house-ish type building with old, wooden, creaky floors and plaster walls. i am learning the joys of no garbage disposal, no dishwasher, window air conditioning units and a tiny kitchen. it is quite wonderful though... so don't think i am complaining.
